Govs run away from Knights

By

POSTED: Thursday, January 08, 2009

They're young and spunky, those Castle Knights.

They're just not ready, not yet, for the No. 2 team in the state. Farrington came up with 16 steals to run away from the Knights 73-42 last night before about 300 fans at Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse.

Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo scored 14 points to lead the Governors, who improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East (8-4 overall).

Center Lusina Otineru added six points, seven rebounds and a team-high five steals for Farrington, which is the overwhelming favorite to win the OIA. Coach Caroline Tatupu played platooned her squad throughout the game, and all but one Gov got scored.

“;They're athletic, big and they can shoot. There aren't many weaknesses,”; Castle coach Jeff McKeown said. “;Their post is really good. She set the tempo early and dominates in the set offense.”;

That post, Otineru, was effective in Farrington's man-to-man defense and ran the floor with the guards on several fastbreaks.

“;She can be a dominant player. I've been trying to push her mentally,”; Tatupu said of the fourth-year varsity player. Tatupu recently named Otineru co-captain.

“;I think she's starting to come out of her shell,”; the coach said.

Castle led briefly at 4-2 and was still in the game late in the first quarter. The Knights trailed 12-9 after a couple of baskets by Leisha Liilii. Farrington's halfcourt traps, however, wore down the inexperienced Knights. The Govs went on a 12-2 run, forcing eight Castle turnovers before the quarter was done.

Tatupu-Leopoldo, a sophomore guard, dished out four assists as Farrington seized a 24-11 lead.

The visitors got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Brandee Sasaki and Liilii, both sophomores, each scored 10 points to pace Castle (0-2). Seven of the Knights are freshmen or sophomores, and they have only two seniors on the roster.

McKeown had that in mind as the Knights went to the lockerroom down 37-18 at halftime.

“;I knew (Farrington) would come out with a lot of energy,”; said McKeown, who called three time outs in the first 10 minutes. “;Our girls were a little nervous, a little affected by the (defensive) pressure. We just wanted to win a quarter, execute and take our time.”;

Castle found its groove against Farrington's second team and had the bonus before the end of the third quarter. The Knights scored all 13 of their third-quarter points from the foul line (13-for-16). They finished the contest 26-for-38 from the charity stripe (68 percent).

Farrington got solid play from guard Natalie Mata (eight points, four assists), forwards Kirsten LIana (eight points, six boards) and Aisha Gaea (eight points), and reserve guard Angie Argel (seven points, two steals).

Though they forced 27 turnovers, the Govs also committed 18 of their own.

“;We had some lapses,”; Tatupu said, more concerned about the other end of the floor. “;We gambled too much on defense. Every time we go to the lockerroom, it's about defense and rebounding.”;

The Govs shot 50 percent after halftime against Castle's 2-3 zone.

“;We were a little better on defense and the boards, and we moved the ball a lot quicker,”; Tatupu said.

Farrington's next game is at Kailua tomorrow.
