Kauai man arrested in death of a cat

Kauai authorities charged a 26-year-old Puhi man Monday with second-degree cruelty to animals for allegedly hitting a cat with his car.

Police said Michael Wong was driving his car on Ono Street at 2:30 p.m. when he crossed the double-solid-yellow lines and allegedly struck an orange cat sitting on the opposite side of the road near the shoulder.

Wong then allegedly picked up the cat, put it into a bucket and threw it into a rubbish can at his Ono Street home, police said. A witness called police to report the incident. Police checked to see whether the cat needed medical attention, but found no signs of life, police said.

An officer arrested Wong.

The owner of the cat was notified of its death.

Wong was released without bail Monday. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 18.

Woman 'critical' after being pinned

A 34-year-old Kapolei woman remained in critical condition yesterday after she was pinned under her sport utility vehicle Monday afternoon in Enchanted Lake.

Police said the woman driver had stopped her SUV on an incline in front of 946-A Kalawai Place, and let her son out.

Her son fell to the ground, and the woman got out to help him, police said.

The SUV began rolling downhill and she reached inside to try stop it, police said. The woman's 5-year-old daughter remained inside the vehicle.

The woman was dragged down the roadway as the SUV jumped a curb, mowed down a mailbox and bushes, and ended up in a yard at 947 Kalawai Place, police said.

The woman was pinned under the SUV, police said. Neighbors helped free her by using large pieces of lumber, a fire official said.

Suspect held in bank robbery

Police arrested a 57-year-old man who sat down outside a Kailua bank shortly after he allegedly robbed it yesterday morning.

The man entered the Territorial Savings Bank at 19 Oneawa St. at about 10:40 a.m.

He approached and handed the teller a demand note, police said. The teller handed an undisclosed amount of cash to the man, and he left through the bank entrance, police said.

Officers arrived and found the man sitting outside the bank.

They arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
