Neighbors free woman under car

Neighbors freed a woman who was pinned under her own car in Kailua at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday.

The woman, who appeared to be in her 30s, was taken by ambulance in critical condition to a hospital, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the Emergency Services Department.

Paramedics and doctors stabilized the woman, and she was taken in critical condition to another hospital, Cheplic said.

Using 4-by-4 pieces of lumber as a lever, neighbors on Kalawai Place were able to free the woman, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The car had apparently rolled over the woman, Seelig said.

Two children were in the car at the time, he said.

Woman arrested in attack on ex

A 28-year-old woman was arrested last night after she and her brother allegedly assaulted her ex-boyfriend, sending him to the hospital.

At 2:15 a.m. New Year's Day, the suspect argued with her 23-year-old ex-boyfriend in Kahuku. She and her brother allegedly assaulted the victim, striking him in the head with an unknown object, police said.

The victim was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was treated for head injuries. At 8 p.m. yesterday, the woman was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault. Her brother, 23, has not been located.

Violent argument results in arrest

Police arrested a 44-year-old man who allegedly used a crowbar and a machete to threaten his neighbor yesterday.

At about 5:10 p.m., the suspect and a 62-year-old man argued in front of their Kahuku homes. Police said the suspect allegedly picked up a crowbar, threatened his neighbor and chased him.

Other neighbors restrained the suspect and disarmed him of the crowbar. But the suspect allegedly picked up a machete and resumed his chase and threats.

Police were called; they arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Fire crews rescue hiker near lava

HILO » The Hawaii County Fire Department made a nighttime rescue of a Big Island lava viewer Sunday after the woman got lost while hiking to the flow, fire officials said.

The 43-year-old hiker, whose name was not released, made a cell phone call telling officials she was about 200 yards from the flow. Rescue personnel arriving at the scene saw the hiker's flashlight glow from a mile away but told her not to move so she would not hurt herself in the dark. A county helicopter picked her up, guided by her flashlight.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the lava entry into the ocean was “;vigorous”; at the time.

Kauai police ID waterfall victims

WAILUA, Kauai » Kauai police identified two men found at the bottom of waterfalls last week.

On New Year's Eve, Clayton Carlson, 25, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., was found at the bottom of a 10-foot waterfall in Anini Stream by a visitor. On New Year's Day, Troy Paul Crawford, 40, of Kapaa was found at the bottom of Wailua Falls in Lihue.

Autopsies were performed on both men yesterday, Kauai officials said, and no evidence was found of foul play in either case.

Theater robbery leads to 2 arrests

Big Island police arrested two Kailua-Kona men, ages 21 and 24, Sunday night who allegedly robbed a Kailua-Kona movie theater.

Kona patrol officers responded at about 11 p.m. Sunday to a robbery at a theater on Alii Drive.

Two men wearing hooded jackets and bandannas over their faces entered the theater and confronted a female employee, police said. The men allegedly held the woman at gunpoint and demanded cash and the combination to the safe. When the woman told them she could not provide the combination, they bound her wrists and ankles and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Police found two men who were wearing clothes matching the description of the suspects. They tried to flee as the officers approached them.
