Amis on target

With two friends from high school sharing the court, Paul Campbell enjoyed his most productive game since those prep days in Canada.

While Bill Amis was in the spotlight after Hawaii's dramatic 65-64 win over Louisiana Tech last night at the Stan Sheriff Center, Campbell played more than a supporting role in the victory.
The junior center bounced back from a rough night against Boise State on Saturday to help the Rainbow Warriors rebound against the Bulldogs and snap a six-game Western Athletic Conference losing streak.
Campbell posted the first double-double of his career, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds and five blocked shots while playing 37 minutes—all career highs.
“;This is the best game I've played in a long time. Probably since high school,”; Campbell said. “;It feels good to get the win especially.”;
With forward Petras Balocka hampered by a sore hamstring, Campbell didn't leave the court in the second half of last night's win, which was punctuated by Amis' game-winning jumper with 8.1 seconds left.
Campbell—a lean 6-foot-10, 215 pounds—posted his totals while spending most of the evening banging with 260-pound LaTech center Kenneth Cooper.
“;He plays with his heart and plays with a lot of desire,”; Hawaii head coach Bob Nash said. “;To see his growth as a player and come in and get a starting role and step up tonight and help us in a situation where we had some guys who were injured shows what kind of team player he is.”;
Campbell played sparingly last season and was a role player early in his junior year before being inserted into the starting lineup during the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.
But he was shut out in 7 minutes of action against Boise State, missing his lone attempt Saturday night.
The turnaround started Sunday afternoon.
“;I told the guys we have to bring a lot of energy into these next couple practices,”; Campbell said. “;The WAC is the most important part of the season, so if we don't bring energy into practices, there won't be any energy in the games.”;
He contributed to Hawaii's hot start by exceeding his previous career high with seven first-half points. He was 3-for-3, the third coming when he saved a ball to Roderick Flemings, then scored on a putback off Flemings' miss.
Campbell's tip-in with 7:15 left in the second half gave the Rainbows a 60-53 lead. But those would be Hawaii's last points until the final 25 seconds as LaTech stormed back to take a 64-60 lead.
But Kareem Nitoto's 3-pointer and Amis' decisive jumper gave Campbell bragging rights for the moment over fellow Canadians and LaTech reserves Yonas Berhe and Olu Ashaolu.
“;I might talk a little garbage here or there,”; said Campbell, who played on the same AAU team as Berhe. “;But the most important thing is Hawaii got the win.”;
