Iguana proves elusive along Pali
A 3-foot iguana slipped away from police and state inspectors along the Pali Highway yesterday.
Callers reported the green reptile at about 11:30 a.m. While waiting for state agricultural inspectors, police monitored the lizard as it sat in a tree at St. Stephen's Diocesan Church Center at 6301 Pali Highway.
The inspectors arrived at about 2 p.m., but the iguana climbed high into the tree and got away, said Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Janelle Saneishi.
Iguanas were brought into Hawaii before tougher import rules were made about half a century ago. They have become established in some parts of the state, Saneishi said.
“;It's not unusual,”; she said. “;We find a couple per year.”;
If you see an iguana, call the state Agriculture Department at 643-PEST.
