No. 6 Mid-Pac holds on

For the first time in a while, Mid-Pacific was on the verge of blowing out Sacred Hearts.
But, as recent history shows, wins over the Lancers don't come easy.
Jordan Kealoha scored 11 points, including going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, as No. 6 Mid-Pac eked past Sacred Hearts 51-45 last night.

The Owls (11-2) nearly blew a 15-point lead, but hung on to even their record in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play at 1-1.
“;We had some mistakes on defense,”; Kealoha said of missed assignments. “;But you can't take anything away from them. Sacred Hearts is scrappy.”;
Sacred Hearts (8-4, 0-2) lost its second close game in a row to start league play.
A crowd of 141 in Dorothy Macy Nobriga Gymnasium saw Johnnelle Kapua and Keaton McFadden lead the Owls. Kapua had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and McFadden tallied 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Owls shot just 31 percent against SHA's man-to-man defense, but it was rebounding that bothered coach Byron Cheng.
“;We do drills where the rebound never hits the ground, but I counted five tonight,”; Cheng said. “;Sacred Hearts absolutely outplayed us and out-coached us. They wanted it more. We got the (15-point) lead and we relaxed.”;
Raecha-Ann Kauahikaua had 15 points and five rebounds for the Lancers. Forward Kuhina Luis had a team highs 16 points and 15 boards, and Kamri Lin added five points and 12 rebounds.
“;In the beginning, we weren't shooting as much,”; Kauahikaua said. “;In the end, we got more aggressive. Offensively, you just take have to take the shot. Don't be scared.”;
Last year, MPI won both meetings with Sacred Hearts in overtime (45-43 and 57-49). The Owls seized an early 15-5 lead and opened the margin to 36-21 early in the third quarter. They still led by 15, 41-26, early in the fourth.
Lancers coach Alan Matsui, imploring his team to play aggressively, got his wish from that point on. After committing 17 turnovers in the first three quarters, the Lancers had just two giveaways in the final stanza. They drove hard against the Owls, who were over the foul limit early, and took 17 free-throw attempts in the fourth. SHA hit 12 of those, including two by Kauahikaua, to pull within 48-44 with 22 seconds left.
However, inexperience caught up with the Lancers, who allowed Mid-Pac to inbound the ball easily and burn 5 seconds off the clock. Though the Owls missed seven free-throw tries in the fourth, Sacred Hearts wound up fouling Kealoha, one of MPI's best shooters.
Kealoha sank both of her foul shots and the Lancers never got closer in the final 17 seconds.
For SHA, which has losses only to Top 10 teams (No. 2 Farrington, No. 3 Lahainaluna, No. 5 Kamehameha), it was too little, too late.
The Lancers were in the bonus at the start of the second quarter, but attempted only two free throws during those 8 minutes. Mid-Pac had an 18-11 edge on the boards by halftime, but Sacred Hearts finished the game with a 37-34 advantage.
