Junior surfers advance at worlds
Bethany Hamilton and Leila Hurst of Kauai advanced to today's quarterfinals of the girls division of the Billabong World Junior Surfing Championships at Sydney, Australia.
Hamilton, who lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003, outpointed California's Sage Erickson in the third round. The 18-year-old will face top-seeded Australian Laura Enever in the quarterfinals.
Hurst advanced after upsetting Coco Ho, Hawaii's top seed, in their third-round heat. The 15-year-old Hurst meets Brazil's Diana Cristina today.
Sea Warriors edge Vulcans
Mike Helton scored 17 points and Jason Curtis hit four free throws in the final 34 seconds of overtime as Hawaii Pacific held on for a 81-79 nonconference victory over Hawaii-Hilo in a men's basketball game last night at Afook-Chinen Civic.
Curtis finished with 16 points and Willis McPhee added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (6-4).
The Vulcans (7-3) had five players in double-figure scoring, led by Jay de Maestri's 15. Perry Baggett added 14 points and had 17 rebounds.
» Tom Whitehead scored 18 points as Dixie State rallied past Chaminade 66-64 at Burns Gym in St. George, Utah.
The host Rebels (6-6, 1-0 PWC) won the game at the free-throw line, going 12-for-15 while the foul-plagued Silverswords were 2-for-4.
Joel Smith led Chaminade (3-6, 0-1) with 26 points, going 11-for-16 from the field, and hitting three of the team's eight 3-pointers. Mohamed Tangara added 11 points and Jamar Berry came off the bench for 10 points and eight rebounds for the Silverswords who led by as many as 13 twice in the first half (19-6 and 24-11).
Kimitete leads UH-Hilo over HPU
Hina Kimitete scored 23 points to lead Hawaii-Hilo over Hawaii Pacific 73-63 in a nonconference women's basketball game at Afook-Chinen Civic.
Kimitete hit three of the Vulcans' five 3-pointers. UHH, which lost to HPU in Friday's PacWest opener, improved to 5-3.
Paris Gravely scored 15 points for the Sea Warriors (4-8). Mackenna Karasawa came off the bench for 14 points, hitting all three of her 3-point shots.
» At St. George, Utah, Dixie State opened with a 21-2 run and never looked back to routing Chaminade 95-36 yesterday at Burns Arena.
BreAnne Haslam and Deney Phommabout led the Lady Rebels (7-5, 1-0 PWC) with 15 points each.
Jasmine Dulan and Ayla Mull scored eight apiece for the Silverswords (0-8, 0-1), who extended their losing streak to 34 games dating back to last season.
