No. 5 Kahuku tops No. 6 Kaimuki
POSTED: Saturday, January 03, 2009
Chapter 1 in the Kahuku-Kaimuki saga unfolded with a good beginning for the Red Raiders.
Jray Galeai and Nehoa Akina combined for 29 points as No. 5 Kahuku rallied past sixth-ranked Kaimuki 64-50 last night in the Oahu Interscholastic Association opener for both teams. A crowd of about 400 watched at the Bulldogs' gym, including at least 100 vocal Kahuku fans.
Kahuku (6-1 overall) had been idle since edging Punahou in a nonconference game before Christmas, but showed no signs of rust last night. It took a charge out of coach Hiram Akina to get the Red Raiders working right.
Down 32-27 at intermission, Kahuku had been outrebounded by the smaller Bulldogs 17-9.
“;I've got no voice, but I told them, 'I can't believe, we're supposed to be the most feared team, probably, in the league, and we've got only nine rebounds,”; Hiram Akina said in a hoarse voice.
Kahuku turned the game around after halftime with plenty of defense, too. Using both 1-3-1 and man-to-man defenses, the visitors limited Kaimuki to 14 percent shooting from the field after the break (4-for-29). Kaimuki missed all 14 of its 3-point shots in the second half as Kahuku went on a 26-11 blitz.
Kahuku's towering frontcourt gave Kaimuki's Desmond Tautofi fits. Tautofi, who had 20 points and 20 boards in a recent game against 'Iolani, managed just three points on 1-for-11 shooting and nine caroms.
“;We wanted to keep him off the offensive boards,”; coach Akina said. “;By running and pressing, we knew we could wear them down.”;
Galeai led Kahuku with 16 points, mostly in transition, and Nehoa Akina added 13 points, including 10 in the pivotal third quarter. Pivot men Kona Schwenke (10 points), Christian Feagai (nine) and Shairone Thompson (eight) gave Kahuku plenty of options on the low post against Kaimuki's man defense.
David Taulung led Kaimuki with 12 points, but struggled in the second half as Kahuku shut off the pipeline of kick-out passes to 3-point gunners. Ryan Kakitani and Kelly Tobin added 11 points each.
Coach Kelly Grant wasn't pleased, but he wasn't worried, either.
“;We're still not in condition yet. I really believe in not peaking too early,”; he said. “;If Kahuku was in the ILH, they'd be up there with the best teams. It comes down to quality shots and plays, and they had their legs. We just had too many turnovers outside the key.”;
The Bulldogs got 3-pointers from Elijah Morita and Kakitani to spark a 16-3 run in the first half. Even with Tautofi on the bench with two fouls, Kaimuki was up 27-14 midway through the second quarter.
The 6-foot-8 Feagai scored six points in a row to halt Kaimuki's run.
Kahuku's full-court pressure took a toll on the Bulldogs. Galeai and Aulola Tonga, both first-team All-State defensive backs in football, had key steals during Kahuku's rally. The two finished with three steals apiece. Galeai's only 3-pointer, from the left wing, gave Kahuku a 36-35 lead midway through the third quarter.
After Thompson hustled for a putback, Kahuku led 39-37 and never trailed again. Nehoa Akina spotted up in transition and hit two treys in the third, including one with 3 seconds left for a 53-43 lead.
“;The shots happened to be there,”; said Akina, who also had five assists. “;Irwin (Ah-Hoy) was able to kick it out.”;
Kahuku shot 49 percent from the field (23-for-48) and 67 percent from the foul line (14-for-21).
