Kawano honored for service

Bruce Kawano, Hawaii Boxing's Junior Olympics chairman, was honored for his service on behalf of female boxers by USA Boxing yesterday.

Kawano, of Pearl City, was recognized with a “;women's boxing accolade”; for his service to help women and girls participate in amateur boxing.

Smith spoils HPU's trip to Hilo

Senior guard John Smith scored a team-high 19 points and senior forward Jay Maestri added 18 points—all on 3-pointers—to lead Hawaii-Hilo over Hawaii Pacific 77-66 last night in the Pac West men's basketball opener for both at Afook-Chinen Civic.

DeMaestri completed his double-double with 10 rebounds for the Vulcans (7-2, 1-0 PWC). UHH was 21 of 31 from the line with Smith going 9 for 10.

Senior guard Jason Curtis led the Sea Warriors (5-4, 0-1) with 19 points. Junior forward Willis McPhee added a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and junior guard Jeff Ingram added 11 points.

» Junior forward Genesis Lewis scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific over host Hawaii-Hilo 70-66 in the Pac West women's basketball opener for both teams last night at Afook-Chinen Civic.

Senior guard Monica Chock came off the bench to score 11 points in 12 minutes, including three 3-pointers, for the Sea Warriors (4-7, 1-0 PWC).

Junior forward Jessica Hanato led the Vulcans (3-3, 0-1) with 14 points, and junior guard Hina Kimitete and freshman forward Hotia Vaaimamao added 11 each.
