Man charged after car chase

Police yesterday charged a 19-year-old homeless man who crashed an allegedly stolen car into a telephone pole Wednesday in Manoa while trying to evade police.

Keola Acasia was charged with second-degree robbery, two counts of driving a stolen vehicle, two counts of driving recklessly, driving without a license, and warrants. He was being held on $25,000 bail.

Passenger Michael Desales Spiker, 53, of Winam Avenue in Kaimuki, was also charged with two counts of entering a stolen vehicle and for outstanding warrants. He was being held in lieu of $2,150 bail.

At about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, an officer saw the vehicle, which was reported stolen Monday, and chased it, but it sped off. Acasia allegedly lost control of the car and hit a telephone pole on Manoa Road.

Acasia was convicted of second-degree burglary on Oct. 1, according to Hawaii's criminal data Web site. He was scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 3 for sentencing, but didn't show up. He was also found guilty last year of promoting a detrimental drug, violating his probation, and third-degree assault.

Arson case opened in blaze at house

Police have opened a first-degree arson case after a suspicious fire caused $45,000 damage to a house in Papakolea on New Year's Eve.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 554 Kauhane St. at about 11:30 p.m. and brought it under control within 15 minutes, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Fire investigators are still looking for a cause, but they do not suspect fireworks, Seelig said. Police said the fire, which damaged the first floor of the home, appeared intentionally set. They said several family members were home at the time. All escaped unharmed.
