Seminars feature feng shui expert

Learn how to make the most of the Year of the Ox by taking in Lillian Too's “;Feng Shui Extravaganza”; at the Ala Moana Hotel.

The author of several books on the topic will share her expertise on the ancient Chinese art of “;placement and arrangement of space”; for health and prosperity with weekend workshops.

Seminars are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 17 (”;Workshop on Feng Shui Astrology”;) and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 (”;Feng Shui Updates for Year 2009”;).

Tickets cost $98 each, or $178 for both days, and are available at the World of Feng Shui. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. Call 739-8288.

Symphony harpist to give talk

Honolulu Symphony harpist Constance Harding Uejio will share her insights on music-making at a “;Meet the Musicians”; event Monday at Borders Ward Centre.

The free session, from 7 to 8 p.m., is one in a series spotlighting symphony musicians at the second-floor stage area of Borders' music department. A pair of tickets to a symphony concert is given away at each event.

Uejio, principal harpist with the symphony for 25 seasons, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. She will share the story of her musical career, offer a preview of upcoming concerts and talk about the role of the harp in the orchestra.

Aviation museum free for teachers

Teachers are invited to start the new year with a free visit to the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor on Monday or Tuesday.

To enter, teachers must present a current school ID at the USS Bowfin Submarine Park ticket office near the Arizona Memorial office and board the shuttle bus to Ford Island. Family and friends may enter for the kamaaina rate of $10; $5 children.

Teachers will also receive Aligned Education Program packets for use in their classrooms.

Also at the museum, historian Ronald J. Drez will speak on “;The Extraordinary Courage of Ordinary Men in WWII,”; at 7 p.m. Jan. 9; and “;The Essence of Courage: Leadership at the Top,”; at 2 p.m. Jan. 10.

The author of “;Voices of D-Day,”; “;Twenty-Five Yards of War,”; “;Voices of Valor: D-Day June 6, 1944,”; Drez will sign books before and after his lectures.

PBS' Dicus, Boylan to merge shows

PBS Hawaii is combining its two live, weekly public affairs shows, “;Everybody's Business”; with Howard Dicus, and “;Insights,”; hosted by Dan Boylan.

Beginning Jan. 15, Dicus will move from his usual Friday night spot to join Boylan at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays. The final broadcast of “;Everybody's Business”; was Dec. 26.

The program will be rebroadcast at 10:30 p.m. Fridays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

Talks tackle Friel's 'Translations'

Two free lectures will be presented in connection with the Kennedy Theatre production of playwright Brian Friel's “;Translations.”;

Lecturer Susan C. Harris is in residence at the University of Hawaii-Manoa as a part of the “;Page to Stage”; program. A professor and author in the field of Irish drama, Harris will examine questions of context, history and contemporary issues related to Hawaiian language and culture through Friel's play.

“;Remaking History: Friel, Field Day and the First Translation”; will be held on Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. in Kuykendall Hall, Room 410. “;Found in Translation: Baile, Baeg and Twenty-first Century America”; will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 in Hamilton Library. Refreshments will be served at both events.
