Man, 45, allegedly assaults girlfriend

Police arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and then allegedly breaking into her apartment Tuesday.

Police said the suspect approached his 20-year-old girlfriend at about 4 p.m. at an apartment complex on Waikalani Drive near Mililani and head-butted her.

The woman retreated into her apartment, and the suspect allegedly forced his way in through the door and began choking her. Police were called, and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and first-degree burglary.

Stolen checks lead to arrest of 2 men

Police arrested two men who allegedly tried to cash stolen checks at a Pearl City business Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the men, ages 42 and 40, tried to cash more than $2,500 worth of checks stolen in a recent burglary. Police arrested the men on suspicion of second-degree forgery.

Kayakers get tow from firefighters

Fire personnel assisted two kayakers who were on Manana Island, also known as Rabbit Island, off Makapuu on Tuesday.

Someone called police at about 8:56 a.m. thinking the two were in trouble, but they were simply resting, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The two men had set off from Makapuu in inflatable kayaks. The men were resting on the restricted island when police were called.

The men were not injured or in trouble, but when they found the journey back difficult because of strong wind and a strong current, the Fire Department towed the men in before 10 a.m., Seelig said.

$2,500 is stolen from restaurant

Police are looking for a suspect or suspects who burglarized the Big City Diner at 3585 Waialae Ave. early Monday.

Police said about $2,500 was stolen from a safe in the restaurant's office. The safe had been pried open and the cash removed between 12:35 a.m. Monday, when the restaurant closed, and 5:35 a.m., when the morning crew arrived, police said. A crowbar, hammer and head lamp were left at the scene, police said.

Maui crash victim is airlifted to Oahu

The Coast Guard airlifted an accident victim yesterday from Maui to Honolulu for hospitalization.

The 25-year-old man was hurt in a head-on collision on Maui at 3:45 a.m., the Coast Guard said in a news release.

A C-130 Hercules aircraft from Barbers Point picked up the patient in Kahului and flew him back to Oahu, where Honolulu Emergency Services personnel transferred him to an ambulance around 8:15 a.m.

He was taken for treatment at the Queen's Medical Center.
