Lingle gives Aloha Stadium $4 million
Gov. Linda Lingle released $4 million yesterday to design future renovations and improvements for 33-year-old Aloha Stadium.
The funds are not part of the nearly $1.9 billion public infrastructure construction plan that was unveiled earlier this month to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
The projects to be designed are needed to repair and upgrade the stadium to allow for its continued use another 20 to 30 years. The work will include structural retrofits and repairs, recoating and repainting, waterproofing, seat replacement, new public elevators, restroom expansions and other improvements.
Design is scheduled to begin next June and be completed in July 2010. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2011 and be completed in July 2012.
Rainbow Wahine finish season No. 7
The Hawaii women's volleyball team was ranked No. 7 in yesterday's AVCA Coaches Top 25, the highest final ranking for the Rainbow Wahine in six years.
The Rainbow Wahine finished 31-4, their first 30-win season since 2004. Hawaii saw its season ended by eventual national runner-up Stanford in the NCAA regional final in Fort Collins, Colo.
This was the 22nd time the Wahine finished the season in the Top 10 in the 27-year history of the coaches poll. No. 7 is the highest ranking for Hawaii since placing third in 2003.
Penn State was the unanimous No. 1 selection after successfully defending its national title. Following the Nittany Lions were Stanford, Nebraska, Texas, Washington and Cal.
Hawaii's four losses were to No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Stanford, No. 8 UCLA and New Mexico State. The Aggies received enough votes to place 27th.
