Homeless man charged in robbery

Prosecutors charged a 43-year-old homeless man yesterday who allegedly robbed a Waikiki convenience store Wednesday morning.

Tommy J. Chiles was charged with second-degree robbery yesterday. Bail was set at $20,000.

Chiles entered the store at 2463 Kuhio Ave. at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday and allegedly took several items and left, police said. The store owner, a 60-year-old man, confronted him. Chiles allegedly punched him and tried to flee, police said.

The owner and a 22-year-old man detained Chiles until police arrived and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Officials identify killed motorcyclist

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the motorcyclist who died in a crash 12:45 a.m. Wednesday as Bryan Devlin, 24, of Honolulu.

Devlin was a medic at Tripler Army Medical Center.

He died of multiple blunt force injuries due to the crash in which his motorcycle was reportedly speeding and hit a car broadside on Nimitz Highway. The car driver, 35-year-old Gregg Gurtiza of Salt Lake, was also killed.

Police said the motorcyclist and motorcycle penetrated the car's passenger side and became lodged inside the vehicle.

Gurtiza was turning left from Nimitz onto Camp Catlin Road when his was struck by the motorcycle with such force that the car flipped over.

Lihue Airport melee results in arrest

LIHUE » A man trying to buy a plane ticket to Maui with his mother was arrested at Lihue Airport on Wednesday for assault, resisting arrest and damaging an airport kiosk.

Cator Donahue, 22, of Eugene, Ore., became agitated at the Hawaiian Airlines ticket counter and smashed the kiosk machine. Airport security restrained Donahue, who could be heard yelling profanities and verbally challenging security officers, county officials said yesterday.

The confrontation escalated, police said, and moved to the rental car counter across the street. In the melee, two airport security officers were injured, and when a police officer arrived and tried to search Donahue after he had been apprehended, Donahue allegedly head-butted the officer.

Donahue has been charged with criminal property damage, two counts of assault, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer. He is being held at KPD headquarters in lieu of $6,450 bail.

It's the second arrest at the airport in less than a week. On Saturday, Raymond Fessler, 55, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was arrested after allegedly punching two flight attendants on a U.S. Airways flight to Kauai.

 

Big Isle man charged in assault

A 59-year-old Kailua-Kona man was charged Thursday with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with a domestic dispute in Kailua-Kona.

John Reece faces charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree terroristic threatening and felony abuse of a family/household member. Bail was set at $22,000.

Police responded to a report of a domestic argument Wednesday evening on Haoa Street and found Reece had allegedly wrapped a belt around his wife's neck and tried to strangle her.

The 50-year-old woman had screamed for help, and neighbors came to her aid, and helped her flee to safety, according to police.

Police arrested Reece for felony abuse of a family/household member, and was charged Thursday with attempted murder.
