  A 62-year-old man pleaded guilty in Circuit Court yesterday to stabbing to death his 63-year-old wife.

Victorio Barayuga faces 20 years in prison and will be sentenced March 9, a Honolulu Prosecutor's Office spokesman said. As part of the plea agreement, his second-degree murder charge, punishable by life in prison with the chance for parole, was reduced to manslaughter.

Since his wife was over 62 years old, Barayuga must serve 6 years and 8 months before he is eligible for parole.

In June 2007, Barayuga stabbed his wife, Liwliwa, in the chest and then slashed his wrists. Court documents said before the attack he had argued with his wife about returning to the Philippines because he was “;going crazy”; and stabbed her after hearing voices that told him to “;do it.”;

Kau Kau Wagon seeks donations

The Kau Kau Wagon, a nonprofit program that provides meals to the needy every week in Chinatown, is asking for donations for its “;Christmas of Hope”; potluck Dec. 27.

Meals for more than 700 people will be served at 1 p.m. at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park (formerly Gateway Park) at the corner of Hotel and Bethel streets. The menu includes turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, yams, stuffing, gravy, veggies, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

The Kau Kau Wagon is also in need of toiletry items; clothing, towels, wash cloths, blankets; Costco and Sam's Club gift cards, and fast-food certificates. All donations can be dropped off at the park starting at noon that day. Isle agency and UH teacher honored

Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo presented awards to the United Filipino Council of Hawaii and to University of Hawaii professor Teresita Ramos at Malacanang Palace in Manila.

The Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas were given to 31 Filipinos and organizations Wednesday in Rizal Hall, according to a news release from Malacanang Palace. The awards recognize dedicated service and efforts for the improvement of the lives of Filipinos and to those who have excelled in their professions.
