State flags will fly at half-staff tomorrow in honor of Rep. Bob Nakasone, the longtime Maui legislator who died earlier this month.

Nakasone died Dec. 7 after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.

Funeral services are scheduled tomorrow at Ballard Family Mortuary on Maui.

In a proclamation issued yesterday, Gov. Linda Lingle called Nakasone a dedicated public servant who will be sorely missed.

“;Rep. Nakasone will be remembered as a leader, mediator and champion for the Maui community,”; the proclamation states. “;He pushed for improved health care and played an important role in securing major capital improvements for Kahului Harbor and the Kahului Airport.”;

Nakasone won re-election in November, running in the 9th District (Kahului-Lower Paia) after undergoing a round of chemotherapy earlier this year.

He served 16 years in the state House, beginning in 1992, and 10 years on the Maui County Council, ending in 1989 as Council chairman.
