POSTED: Thursday, December 18, 2008

The city has completed an emergency access road in Waianae that will give motorists another route when Farrington Highway is closed, Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced yesterday.

; The bypass route would only be used in emergency situations, such as last week's heavy downpour that prevented Waianae residents from entering or leaving the area.

“;This route will help ensure that Waianae residents are not cut off from their homes and families whenever there is a serious traffic accident or other incidents that blocks Farrington Highway,”; Hannemann said. “;The route will also enhance public safety in the area by providing an alternative path for emergency vehicles.”;

  The route is a network of existing roads connected by new roads and extends from Pohakunui Avenue to Waianae Valley Road. The cost of the connecting roads was $5.86 million.

The remaining section of Farrington Highway that cannot be accessed using the bypass goes from Haleakala Avenue to Helelua Street.

The bypass roads normally will be locked. During emergencies, city officials will open the gates and divert traffic.
