WAILUKU » A father apparently upset at his live-at-home adult son's messy habits shot him to death at their house in Kahului, police said yesterday.

“;It was an ongoing housekeeping issue,”; said police Lt. John Jakubszak.

Jakubszak said the father wanted his son to pick up after himself.

Arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder was Joe D. Antonio, 45, of Kahului.

Police said Antonio shot his 19-year-old son, Jose Jr., at the family's residence in a Kahului suburb.

Neighbors said they heard six to seven shots in quick succession after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Upon arriving at 496 S. Kamehameha Ave., police officers found a 19-year-old man lying on the ground, fronting the entrance to a rear cottage, said police Lt. Wallace Tom.

He appeared to have been shot several times. Police said the man, who was unresponsive when examined by authorities, died at the scene.

Antonio Sr. turned himself in at the Wailuku Police Station at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and admitted being the shooter, police said.

The weapon used in the shooting, a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, was found at the scene and held as evidence. Jakubszak said the handgun was owned by Joe Antonio and registered to him.

Police said there were witnesses to the argument between the father and son.

The Antonios, including Joe Antonio's wife and daughter, lived in a rear cottage behind a relative's main house.

Sheena Kuwashima, a neighbor, said she has never heard the people at the residence arguing and that the neighborhood is usually quiet.

Kuwashima said the people living on the property had a karaoke machine and sang a lot.

“;They're usually singing and drinking, and that's it,”; she said.

Antonio has worked in the press department at The Maui News, a daily newspaper on the Valley Isle.

“;We're just very sad,”; said Joe Bradley, publisher and general manager of The Maui News. “;We're concerned about the family, and we just want to wait and see what comes out of it.”;

He said Antonio has been a hard-working employee at The Maui News for long time.

Jose Antonio was a 2007 graduate of Maui High School. Preliminary results of an autopsy found that he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said the killing continued to be under investigation.

Joe Antonio was expected to appear in Wailuku District Court at 1 p.m. today.
