Miller steals show at Hatch fitness awards

Joe Gronwald and Karen Muraoka were named Mr. and Ms. Fitness at Clark Hatch Fitness Center Friday, but Wil Miller stole the show, dancing with joy and showering his wife, Martha, with bills after winning the top cash prize of $200 in a drawing. Wil was the evening's highlight and gave the crowd a big laugh. Thanks to emcee Bill Monsen's witty remarks and Wil's impromptu performance, the crowd was smiling and laughing throughout the dinner party. Another good chuckle came when Bob Peterson was named “;Mr. Sauna.”; Cherry Ann Slagel and Keith Finkboner won the aerobic awards, Naomi Kuwaye and John Ball took the most improved trophies, and Lynne Miura-Orodenker and Darren Bullock won strength awards. Clark Hatch, who sold the center to his business partner Monsen on Jan. 1, 2000, took part in the awards ceremony. Other Hatch staffers participating in the event were upbeat trainer-photographer Don Heafner, Kathy Hurley, Ellen West, Loi Cortez, Bryan Manlic and James Ventura. “;Nutcracker,”; starring the New York City Ballet's Megan Fairchild and Joan Boada from the San Francisco Ballet, with music from the Honolulu Symphony, will be presented Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Blaisdell Concert Hall. Besides the big names, local audiences will be cheering for homegrown “;stars”; in the Act I party scene, including Dr. Phil McNamee as the grandfather, Carolyn Berry as the grandmother, and KITV's Jodi Leong as one of the parents. ...Sorry to learn of former Kauai Police Chief Roy Hiram's death Dec. 9. Roy, 76, and I were boyhood friends when he lived near the Alewa area below Kamehameha Schools. Roy later attended Kamehameha, became an All Star back and stood out in track. After graduating in 1950, he went to San Jose State and set records as a running back. In later years Roy played in golf tourneys I scheduled. He will be missed ...
