KAPAA, Kauai » Kauai Civil Defense Agency has received nearly 40 calls from residents reporting damage to houses and businesses from the weekend's heavy rains.

So far, about $1.8 million in damage has been reported.

Mayor Bernard Carvalho visited flood-damaged properties on the island's west side yesterday.

The agency said the damage included roofs, beds and personal items, vehicles, home appliances, tractors and lawn equipment, tools, water lines and downed trees. One claim cited $1.25 million in damage, with the rest totaling about $550,000, the agency said.

Damage to public property appeared to be minimal apart from some damage to roads, civil defense officials said.

County Finance Director Wally Rezentes Jr. is looking at the tax code to see whether property owners who suffered damage could be eligible for relief through a tax credit.

Damage can be reported to civil defense at 241-1800.
