Mid-Pac, Kaimuki share title

Marcus Holyfield scored 15 points as Mid-Pacific overwhelmed Kalani 52-31 yesterday in the McKinley Black and Gold Tournament.
Mid-Pac (2-0) shared the tourney crown with Kaimuki, which defeated Roosevelt 67-41 in another semifinal.
The tournament was delayed because of leaks in the roof of McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Opening-round games were played on Friday, and yesterday's games concluded the tourney.
Point guard Samson Won, the only other returning starter for Mid-Pac, was a steadying influence. The Owls attacked Kalani's zone with precision most of the afternoon.
Holyfield, a 6-foot-2 senior, is stronger, bigger and faster after an offseason in the weight room. He missed two dunks, but had an otherwise standout performance.
“;Marcus works harder than anyone else,”; coach Nate Hu said. “;In years past, he'd get bumped and pass the ball back out.”;
Kaimuki drilled 10 3-pointers in the win over Roosevelt. Ryan Kakitani (13 points) and Gabriel Stietzel (11) sank three treys each. Desmond Tautofi, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound junior, added 12 points.
Reid Oshiro led Roosevelt with 12 points.
Hu chuckled at the idea of MPI playing Kaimuki at an off-campus site to decide the tourney championship. Crane Park, anyone?
“;I'm sure the kids would love it,”; Hu said.
Seriously, though, the Owls weren't afraid to pressure the ball up high out of their zone.
“;It's an attitude. They're getting there,”; Hu said.
They'll need a lot of that defensive attitude on Thursday, when they face national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in the 'Iolani Classic.
In consolation play, Jordan Ferreira made all seven of his free throws and finished with 15 points to lead Kapolei over McKinley 50-42. Chance Lawson added eight points.
Dylan Gomez scored 26 points and Noah Chong-Viernes added 20 to lead University over Waipahu 70-62.
