Firefighters rescued two teenagers stuck in a rain-swollen stream along Kaneaki Street in Waianae and nine kayakers off Lanikai as heavy rains hit Oahu and Kauai again yesterday.

Downpours to dwindle

        Some relief was expected today for Oahu and Kauai residents with the heavy downpours of the past three days expected to ease.

More showers were predicted “;but we're not anticipating it to be as bad,”; said National Weather Service forecaster Maureen Ballard.

A flash flood watch up for Kauai, Oahu and Niihau last night and a flash flood warning for Kauai and Oahu were expected to be canceled today.

The rains closed roads in Waianae and Wahiawa on Oahu and Kapaa, Koloa, Hanapepe and the Hanalei Bridge on Kauai, even prompting a tornado warning for about 45 minutes when a water spout was spotted off the Garden Island's southwestern coast.

Firefighters rescued two teenage boys stuck in Kaneaki Stream, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha. One boy cut his left leg and was taken by paramedics in unknown condition to Waianae Comprehensive Center, Kealoha said.

Rough seas and low visibility also led kayakers in Lanikai to call for help yesterday afternoon. Capt. Earle Kealoha said firefighters used a personal watercraft to help bring in nine kayakers in different groups, starting at about 2:20 p.m.

Two of the kayakers had drifted about a mile out to sea in zero visibility, Kealoha said. The Coast Guard and fire department helicopters were unable to assist because of low visibility, he said.

The Red Cross sheltered 58 people yesterday in three shelters: Queen Liliuokalani Protestant Church in Haleiwa, Waianae District Park and Brigham Young University gym in Kahuku.

Despite a wet and muddy setup, the Honolulu Marathon was scheduled to go on this morning, spokesman Pat Bigold said.

“;It's a very safe event, and it rains often this time of the year,”; he said. “;There is no indication of anything changing.”;

On Kauai, the National Weather Service issued an unusual tornado warning for about 45 minutes just before 1 p.m.

Forecaster Maureen Ballard said people saw a water spout offshore moving toward land on the southwest side of the island between Waimea and Hanapepe, and trees were reported down in the Hanapepe Valley area.

Callers from Hanapepe, Eleele and Waimea reported “;gusts of wind, like a blast of wind, real strong,”; said Karleen Abalos at the Kauai Civil Defense Agency.

Road closures on Oahu included Kaukonahua Road near the Poamoho Experimental Station after a tree fell onto power lines at about 4 p.m.

In Waianae, police closed Makaha Valley Road and Upena Street off Farrington Highway yesterday afternoon because of flooding. Waianae-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway before the Makakilo offramp also were reported flooded. Some areas on Kauai had 6 to 9 inches of rain between 2 a.m. and 2 p.m, Ballard said.

An overflowing manhole on Kauai spilled about 1,000 gallons of sewage at about 9 a.m. along Waialo Road near the Eleele Shopping Center.

All beaches on Kauai were closed yesterday, and people were asked to stay out of the water. On Oahu, Waimanalo and Bellows beaches remained closed because of storm damage.
