Woman assaults ex-boyfriend on H-1

Police arrested a 24-year-old woman yesterday who allegedly confronted her 44-year-old ex-boyfriend on the H-1 freeway near Kapolei Nov. 26 and assaulted him.

Police said the woman flagged down her ex-boyfriend as he was coming home from work. Both vehicles pulled onto the freeway shoulder at 4 p.m.

The woman got out of her vehicle and allegedly charged toward the man, who was seated in his vehicle, and allegedly punched him through the open driver's side window, police said. The man forced her hand out of the vehicle, and drove to a safer area, police said

The woman was so enraged, she allegedly broke off the stick shift of his vehicle and used it to hit the outside of his vehicle, causing major damage, police said.

Police arrested the woman on suspicion of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree criminal property damage.

Driver of car dies in crash on Maui

A man died early yesterday in a fiery single-car crash in Lahaina, according to Maui police.

At about 12:25 a.m. a car was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway near Halelo Street when it went onto the right shoulder and crashed into a concrete pillar of a golf cart crossing bridge, police said. The vehicle caught fire and was engulfed in flames when officers arrived.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was burned beyond recognition, police said. Identification will be made through medical records.

It is unknown whether the driver was wearing a seat belt or whether the airbags deployed, police said. This is Maui County's 22nd traffic fatality this year, compared with 20 at this time last year.

 

Solo sailor saved south of Hilo

The Coast Guard reported that a 42-year-old French woman sailing solo on an Oceankite, a small boat propelled by a kite-sail, was rescued yesterday 1,700 nautical miles south of Hilo.

The Rescue Coordination Center France contacted the Coast Guard at 8 a.m. Tuesday concerning Anne Quemere after she became stranded in the Intertropical Convergence Zone, known as the Doldrums.

The Coast Guard issued a broadcast asking for help from any vessel in the area that could render assistance.

The container ship Maersk Mytilini responded at 5 p.m. Tuesday and brought Quemere safely aboard the ship at 2 p.m. yesterday. She was reported to be in good condition.

Quemere set sail Nov. 4 from San Francisco bound for Tahiti. The sail on her Oceankite tore, and its pulley system was damaged.

Search suspended for missing diver

The Coast Guard suspended its search yesterday for a missing 69-year-old diver off Maui.

Coast Guard personnel had searched until nightfall yesterday for Tam Sing, who disappeared five miles off the coast of Maui at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Sing had been diving with three others off a commercial fishing boat.

Man, 64, dies after head injuries

A 64-year-old man who was found unconscious with head injuries Sunday on a Waikiki sidewalk died yesterday.

An autopsy is scheduled today to determine the cause of death.

Police have reclassified the case as an unattended death.

The man was found with life-threatening injuries at 12:52 a.m. Sunday on a sidewalk near the intersection of Kalakaua Avenue and Saratoga Road, and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center.
