Punahou School, President-elect Barack Obama's alma mater, will be represented in Washington, D.C., next month when he takes the oath of office.
The Buffanblu Marching Band and JROTC Unit have been invited to march in the 56th Inaugural Parade on Jan. 20, the Presidential Inauguration Committee announced yesterday.
Obama is a 1979 Punahou graduate.
”;I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade,”; Obama said in a news release. “;These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service.”;
The parade down Pennsylvania Avenue will follow Obama's swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol.
Punahou was among a record 1,382 organizations that submitted applications to participate in the parade, the inaugural committee said.
”;For the band and cadets, it's an honor to represent Hawaii and Punahou School in this parade — allowing us to be part of history,”; said Darin Au, head of Punahou's music department. “;Our participation is also meaningful because President-elect Obama is such an inspiration for our students. He's a powerful reminder that they can achieve whatever they dream.”;
U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka congratulated the bands.
”;I know they will make Hawaii proud as they march down Pennsylvania Avenue to Barack Obama's new home, the White House,”; Akaka said in a news release.
According to Akaka, the JROTC unit's parade application included 22 cadets, six cheerleaders and two advisers, while the marching band consists of about 145 students and chaperones.
Punahou spokeswoman Carlyn Tani said the school will be responsible for all costs related to the trip. The school and families of the band and cadet members plan to hold fundraising events to help defray costs, she added.
