Hallelujah! Churches host sound of Christmas

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas as Oahu churches offer holiday concerts.

» Today, 7 p.m. Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St. A free performance of Handel's “;Messiah”; will feature a 150-voice Oratorio Choir, with orchestra, conducted by Timothy Carney.

» Tomorrow, 5:30 p.m. St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The Advent Evensong will feature choral and organ music composed by Oliver Messiaen, Josef Rheinberger, Herbert Sumsion and Everett Titcomb.

» Monday, 7:30 p.m. St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The Honolulu Symphony Brass Ensemble will perform holiday compositions under the direction of Thomas Osborne. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and military. For information call the Chamber Music Hawaii Box Office, 489-5038.

» Wednesday, 7 p.m., Farrington High School auditorium. New Hope Christian Fellowship will sponsor “;The Gift of Hope Charity Concert.”; The Moanalua High School Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble joined by Pastor Wayne Cordeiro, and New Hope musicians will perform holiday favorites. Tickets are $10. The concert will benefit humanitarian relief efforts in Africa by the Mercy Ships organization.

» Friday, 7 p.m. Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nuuanu Ave. The Honolulu Chorale will perform in its free holiday concert featuring Vivaldi's “;Gloria”; with soloist Vicki Gorman, and Mozart's “;Regina coeli”; by the Madrigal Ensemble. The audience may join in singing the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's “;Messiah.”;

» Friday, 7 p.m. Windward Church of Christ, 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kailua. The 50-voice Windward Choral Society will perform Christmas, gospel, Hawaiian and international music in a free concert.

» Dec. 14, 5:30 p.m. St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The Choir Carol Concert will offer traditional Christmas music spanning centuries by choir and instruments, with audience participation welcomed.

» Dec. 14, 7 p.m. Waiokeola Congregational Church, 4705 Kilauea Ave. “;Gifts to the Christ Child from Around the World,”; a pageant highlighting traditions and music from different cultures, will be performed by church members. Refreshments will be served.
