Pedestrian dies from crash wounds

A 43-year-old Big Island man died yesterday from injuries he suffered after a motor vehicle struck him on Hokulani Boulevard in the Hawaii Ocean View Ranchos subdivision. The driver fled.

Responding to a 1:08 a.m. call, Kau patrol officers determined that the victim was walking when he was struck by a vehicle.

A resident returning home found the pedestrian in the middle of the road, police said.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name was being withheld pending notification of family.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated investigations into negligent homicide and accident involving injury or death and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about the driver or vehicle involved in this case to call officer Marvin Troutman at 326-4646, ext. 229.

House arrest escapee sought

The Hawaii Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a 20-year-old Kona man wanted for escape.

 

;  Timothy DeCastro was under house arrest and is wanted for second-degree escape for leaving home Wednesday in violation of the terms of his release.

Police said he is with 17-year-old Mara Martinson and their 2-month-old daughter. Martinson left with DeCastro and failed to return to her Kailua-Kona home.

DeCastro and Martinson were last seen at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

DeCastro is described as 5-foot-10, about 220 pounds, with short, curly blond hair and hazel eyes.

Martinson is described as 5-foot-6, weighing about 165-170 pounds, with brown eyes and long, straight brown hair.

Unlicensed driver arrested in hot car

Police arrested a 37-year-old man after he was found driving without a license in a stolen car.

At 2:26 p.m. yesterday, an officer pulled over the suspect for a traffic stop on Walker Avenue in Wahiawa, police said. The officer then learned that the car the suspect was driving had been reported stolen from a car rental firm, police said

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and driving without a license.

EAST OAHU

Man accused of attacking girlfriend

Police arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping and beating his girlfriend.

Police said that at about 1 a.m. today the suspect and his 23-year-old girlfriend were arguing at the McCully Shopping Center. The suspect allegedly punched the woman in the face, and dragged her to his car against her will. The suspect also allegedly kicked a portable folding street sign into a parked vehicle, causing damage to the right front fender.

About 15 minutes later the suspect was pulled over on Kalanianaole Highway for speeding, police said. The woman told the officer of what had happened, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, abuse and fourth-degree criminal property damage. The woman refused medical treatment for contusions on her face.

Suspect allegedly injures officer

Police arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly broke an officer's finger early yesterday.

At about 1:25 a.m. police arrested the suspect in Hawaii Kai for two outstanding contempt warrants. As an officer was driving the suspect to the police station, the suspect managed to move his hands, which were handcuffed behind his back, to the front of his body.

Police said the 25-year-old man started to yell and bang the window that separates the front and back seats in the police car.

After the officer stopped the vehicle to reposition the suspect's handcuffs, the suspect grabbed and fractured the officer's finger, police said.

The suspect was then arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer.
