Plenty to get excited about in state finals

We hope you enjoyed the fabulous feast prepared for you by Paul Honda in yesterday's Star-Bulletin, previewing tonight's state football finals.

Here's some fried rice from what I found in the fridge.

» Plenty of reasons to expect a very large crowd tonight. Unprecedented star power (who's the man among men, Manti or Manley?) No live TV. Thrilling semifinals. Great balance and drama all season. Defending champs against No. 1. Private school vs. public school in both games. Four wide-open offenses.

» Radford has a great young coach in Fred Salanoa. His mentor? Former Ram Ken Niumatalolo, now at the Navy helm. Salanoa was a 4-year-old water boy when Radford won the Prep Bowl during Niumatalolo's junior season, as the Rams rode the emotion of coach John Velasco's death during the playoffs to the title.

Niumatalolo took time from his preparations for Army to text Salanoa good luck, and also to appear on StarComm's radio show on 1500-AM yesterday.

» When Punahou's Dalton Hilliard first hit the scene a few years ago, we all wondered if he was the son of the former LSU great of the same name who went on to play for the New Orleans Saints and in the 1989 Pro Bowl. Turned out to be no relation.

But there is a Dalton Hilliard Jr., son of the former pro. He, too, is a high school senior and a star on his team in Louisiana.

This from Lee Brecheen's Blog at NewOrleans.Com Sports:

“;He is 5-9, 180 and runs a 4.5 40. He was listed at 155 pounds a year ago, but hard work in the weight room has changed his body and made him a prospect for the next level.”;

Sounds like the Punahou DH, just a little smaller.

» On the UH radio basketball postgame the other night, some genius said, “;This team would be good if it had Anthony Carter.”;

That's like saying, “;This Leilehua team would win if it had Adrian Murrell,”; or “;Punahou would win with Mosi Tatupu.”;

Ya think?

» No one would blame 'Iolani coach Wendell Look if he wore a sign. It would read, “;No, we have no immediate plans to move to Division I. We start 165-pound linemen.”;

» Manley, Te'o, Hilliard and others get way more hype. But any other votes for Kela Marciel of 'Iolani as the state's best all-around player?

» No truth to the rumor that the commanding general at Hickam has agreed to fly Radford around in a C-130 before the game today to make the Rams feel “;at home.”; They had to go to Kauai and Maui to win their other state tourney games.

» Even after that botched pitch in the semis, I can think of only one bad thing about giving Manti Te'o the ball. And that is that Manti Te'o can't block for him.

» Andrew Manley—high school Brett Favre. Gunslinger extraordinaire. And the Mules defense is very underrated.

» Burn after reading: 'Iolani 28, Radford 21. Leilehua 24, Punahou 21—both decided in the final minute.
