Oregon's Unger among Rimington finalists

Oregon senior Max Unger (Hawaii Prep '04) was named one of six finalists yesterday for the Rimington Trophy, presented to the most outstanding center in college football.
The winner will be awarded at the ESPN/Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday.
Unger is the first Duck to be named a finalist for the award. He anchored an offensive line that has helped Oregon rank fourth in the country in rushing, seventh in scoring and eighth in total offense. He has not allowed a sack in 928 snaps and has 74 pancake blocks.
Unger has won the Ed Moshofsky award as the Ducks' best offensive lineman three times and has started 50 straight games.
Oregon could win a share of the Pac-10 title if Southern California loses tomorrow to UCLA. Otherwise, it is probably in line for a spot in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
» Oregon sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns and added 53 rushing yards and a score in a 65-38 win over Oregon State in the Civil War that knocked the Beavers out of the Rose Bowl. Masoli threw touchdown passes of 17, 45 and 76 yards and scored on a 14-yard run.
» Southern California senior linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '05) had a team-high five tackles and an interception in a 38-3 win over Notre Dame. Maiava led a Trojans defense that held the Fighting Irish to only four first downs and 91 total yards.
» Weber State sophomore quarterback Cameron Higgins (Saint Louis '06) threw for 399 yards and two touchdowns in a 49-35 victory over Cal Poly in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision tournament. The Wildcats advanced to take on Montana this weekend.
» Saint Francis (Pa.) offensive lineman Cody Kekipi (Punahou '06) was named to the Northeast Conference first team.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
» Central Washington sophomore Brandie Vea (Kalani '07) was named to the AVCA Division II All-America team yesterday. Vea finished second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a school record 6.08 digs per set. She became the first person in school history to finish with more than 600 digs in a season (626) and tied a conference record with 50 digs in one match.
» Western Nebraska CC freshman Kaleinani Kabalis (Moanalua '08) was named to the NJCAA All-America second team yesterday.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
» Wisconsin-Parkside freshman midfielder Lauki'i Cheng (Kalaheo '08) was named to the Daktronics All-America team after leading the Rangers to a school-best 18-1-2 record this season. Cheng finished the season with two goals and five assists.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
» Pepperdine senior Taylor Smith (Kalaheo '05) started and played 27 minutes for the Waves in a 67-53 loss to Washington. Smith made four of five shots and finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
» UNLV freshman Jamie Smith ('Iolani '08) had nine points, eight rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes in a 75-63 loss to Texas Tech.
» Washington University senior Shanna-Lei Dacanay (Punahou '05) dished out a game-high 10 assists in 16 minutes and added five points and three rebounds in an 83-54 win over Carthage College.
» Menlo College senior guard Kelci Fushikoshi (Lahainaluna '05) was named California Pacific Conference player of the week. Fushikoshi scored 21 points and hit five 3s in a 63-58 victory over No. 19 Grand View. Fushikoshi is leading the Lady Oaks, averaging 18.0 points per game.
» Willamette freshman Tiana Abbley (Kamehameha '08) started and played 18 minutes, scoring five points on 2-for-3 shooting in a 20-point loss to Eastern Oregon. Dayna Jandoc ('Iolani '08) had two rebounds and an assist, but missed both shots off the bench for the Bearcats.
