'Iolani and Radford set for 2005 rematch
POSTED: Thursday, December 04, 2008
In 2005, they were part of a team of Hawaii coaches and players that played an exhibition game in Japan.

Tomorrow, they'll be across the field as opposing coaches in the Division II final of the First Hawaiian Bank State Football Championships. Wendell Look of 'Iolani and Fred Salanoa of Radford are back in the title game in a repeat of the 2005 final the Raiders won 34-20. 'Iolani (10-3), the defending state champion, has been dominant in recent games. The Raiders ousted OIA White champion Campbell last week, 24-6.
Radford (10-3) lost to Campbell in the OIA White title game and is a decided underdog. But that doesn't mean the Rams aren't ready.
“;I learned a lot from Coach Look during that time,”; said Salanoa of the trip to Japan.
Though Salanoa played in a run-and-shoot system at Eastern Washington, his Radford teams have usually taken a more conservative approach. In fact, there may not be a more balanced team than the Rams, who had 325 rushing attempts and 323 passing attempts this season.
“;I'm a pass-happy kind of guy as a quarterback, but as a play caller, I want to be able to run the ball,”; Salanoa said.
Look's teams have been a no-huddle, run-and-shoot bunch thoughout his 18 seasons, but this year's team has run the ball more than 28 times a game. That's slightly above 51 percent of its plays. Often, the Raiders hand the ball to Kellen Imada, who has gained 948 yards on 182 carries, scoring 14 touchdowns.
The low-risk offensive approach goes hand-in-hand with a stout defense led by tackles Kaena Moose and Seali'i Epenesa, linebacker Carl Gibson and defensive backs Breland Almadova and Kela Marciel.
“;You don't want to make mistakes on offense, cheap ones. The defense has been playing well all year and creating things for us as a team,”; Look said. “;We're going to need another great effort from them this week.”;
When Radford has the ball
Sophomore Phil Hogan picked up the slack when injuries hit the backfield. Hogan (253 rushing yards in two games) made a quick transition from the JV level.
The Rams like to run out of single-back sets and the shotgun behind a formidable line. In wins over Kauai and Lahainaluna, the Rams totaled 414 yards (5.4 per carry).
Mosiah Manuma has logged a lot of mileage at quarterback and safety, but seems to hold up well. The speedster is especially dangerous on the option. Last week, he threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 108 yards and another score.
“;I think it's tougher when you've got a team that's multiple,”; Look said. “;Manuma is elusive and versatile. The new kid running the ball (Hogan) makes it tougher. Keeps the defense honest.”;
Radford's corps of receivers is solid. Shawn Putman-Curry had season highs with nine catches, 140 yards and three touchdowns against Lahainaluna. Brad Osborne and Deshawn Robinson are reliable route runners.
Defensively, 'Iolani likes to take away the deep ball, but Radford won't look for the home run often. The Rams will be content to run, run and run as long as the chains keep moving.
When 'Iolani has the ball
If there ever was a no-huddle, no-hurry offense, this is it. Though the pistol - 'Iolani's base formation - offers some variety in the running game, Radford has been proficient defensively. The unit, led by UH-bound Marcus Malepeai, allowed only 3.1 yards a carry this season.
“;If they run away from Marcus, he'll track 'em down, and (Tuulauena) Lolohea is faster than Marcus,”; Salanoa said of his defensive ends.
If Radford closes the running lanes, don't expect 'Iolani to fold. Jarrett Arakawa threw only eight picks in 267 pass attempts.
“;I see 'Iolani as a passing offense, so that definitely surprises me that they run 51 percent of the time,”; Salanoa said. “;Then again, they are trying to control the ball and keep the ball out of the other team's hands.”;
Arakawa fired 19 touchdown passes, including six to Marciel. Brandon Ball (48 receptions), Keenan Hoohuli (35) and Trevyn Tulonghari (32) will face a quick secondary that intercepted Campbell's Lalo Respicio three times in the OIA White final.
Special teams
Radford's Manuma is an effective punter, and returners Ikaika Kamaka and Sean Ouchie are quick. Placekicker Cody Spraker is just a freshman.
'Iolani has a threat with Marciel as a punter and return man. Andrew Skalman, a junior defensive back, is a solid kicker.
Key matchup
Radford WR Shawn Putman-Curry vs. 'Iolani secondary
Though the Rams have plenty of able targets, Shawn Putman-Curry has the size and speed to create an imbalance in the force.
At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, he is tough in traffic. He also has enough speed to blow past a lot of cornerbacks.
'Iolani could put a fast, tall cornerback - Kela Marciel - on Putman-Curry to start off. If that does the trick, the Raiders can focus more on Radford's efficient running game.
If Putman-Curry gets an edge, however, the Raiders may have to shade a safety - Breland Almadova is one of the best - to his side. Putman-Curry lines up alone most times, opposite the triple-receiver side, so any shading by the safeties is a plus for Radford.
The Rams' go-to man (55 receptions, 671 yards, nine scores) can't do much if he's double-teamed, but his presence alone is a big reason why they have been successful running the ball.
