Sex abuser is prison no-show

A newspaper delivery supervisor who admitted sexually assaulting a 13-year-old paper carrier failed to turn himself in to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence Monday and authorities think he is on the run on the mainland.
Frank Lefrandt, 47, of Aiea pleaded guilty last month to second-degree sexual assault, attempted second-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault involving a boy who worked for him.
Lefrandt is scheduled to be sentenced in February. But as part of his plea deal with the state, he accepted a 10-year prison term and agreed to begin serving his sentence Monday.
He had been charged with first-degree sexual assault, attempted first-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault.
“;This plea agreement was negotiated to spare the victim from having to relive it,”; said Deputy Prosecutor Thalia Murphy. “;And now, given that the defendant has fled, this child and his family are suffering once again.”;
Marcus Sierra, Lefrandt's lawyer, says he doesn't know where his client is.
“;It's possible that he just may be a little bit scared of the fact that he's going to have to serve 10 years in prison,”; Sierra said.
Lefrandt had been free on $100,000 bail.
Circuit Judge Steven Alm ordered the bail forfeited yesterday and issued a $5 million warrant for Lefrandt's arrest.
Deputy Sheriff Tommy Cayetano said he received information last Tuesday that Lefrandt's car was left abandoned at the Honolulu Airport. He said the sheriffs at the airport then notified all airlines to be on the lookout for Lefrandt.
Cayetano said he has since received information that Lefrandt left the state, “;not under his specific name,”; and is on the mainland. He told Alm he cannot divulge what information he received without jeopardizing the investigation into Lefrandt's disappearance.
He said Lefrandt's wife and son retrieved the car after the state informed them it was at the airport.
“;His own family has not made a missing-persons report. They apparently are in on the charade,”; Murphy said.
Honolulu police arrested Lefrandt Aug. 10 in the West Ridge Shopping Center parking lot after the boy's father called them.
The boy told police he fell asleep in Lefrandt's van when they went to pick up newspapers at the Honolulu Advertiser's Kapolei printing plant and awoke as Lefrandt was assaulting him.
Lefrandt delivered newspapers as an independent contractor and is not an employee of the Advertiser, according to the company's human resources department.
