A man facing trial for October's home-invasion robbery in St. Louis Heights is also a suspect in a 2007 murder and an attempted murder earlier this year, said Vickie Kapp, deputy prosecutor.

Kapp declined to give details of Jason Darnell Smith's alleged involvement or about the murder and attempted murder cases.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment yesterday charging Smith, 25, with 10 counts of first-degree robbery, 10 counts of kidnapping, first-degree burglary, second-degree theft and using a firearm to commit the crimes.

Smith, also known as “;Sweet,”; has been in custody since his arrest last Tuesday, unable to post $1 million bail.

Circuit Judge Derrick Chan granted Kapp's request yesterday to double Smith's bail to $2 million.

Kapp said Smith has the ability to obtain large sums of money. Police found $20,000 after they searched his home and truck, she said.

Smith also has felony arrests and convictions on the mainland, Kapp said. He has a weapons conviction and arrests on drug charges and a home-invasion robbery, she said.

Police said Smith and two other men forced their way into a home on Oswald Street Oct. 27 looking for someone and demanding drugs. When the suspects learned the person they were looking for no longer lived there, they robbed the 10 people in the home, police said.

Kapp said the suspects forced the occupants onto the floor of the home and took their cell phones and other items. They also hit four victims in the head with the butt of their weapons and kicked one of them, she said.

She said Smith appeared to be the ringleader and that the intruders carried out the robbery like professionals.

Police are still looking for the others.

One is believed to be in his early 20s, 6 feet tall and 170 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a black hoodie, black pants and a dark bandanna.

The other suspect is also believed to be in his early 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 180 to 200 pounds. He was also wearing black pants and a black hoodie.

The victims told police all three men were carrying assault-type firearms.
