KAHULUI » On the Hawaiian music radio station KPOA-FM as well as at special events on the Valley Isle, Henry “;Uncle Boy”; Kana'e was the type of public announcer who could make audiences laugh in a lighthearted way.

“;He was a teaser but he was very spiritual as well,”; recalled Alaka'i Paleka, program director at KPOA.

Kana'e, 55, known on the radio as “;Da Hawaiian Supaman,”; was pronounced dead Monday evening at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Malanai Sunia, one of his daughters, found him at their home in Kahului after he failed to appear for work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the radio station.

Kana'e was a volunteer at many community events, helping in fundraisers at the Maui County Fair and the Hawaiian language immersion program Punana Leo.

Kana'e also helped regularly in food drives and toy drives during Christmas.

He was the cultural director of MauiFEST drive-in film events at Maui Community College and a former Maui manager for the Aloha Festivals program.

“;He had a great, fun-loving aloha spirit. He was such a giver. His heart was so big,”; said Ken Martinez Burgmaier, founder of MauiFEST.

On the radio's Web page, Kana'e, who joined the radio station in 1994, advised listeners to listen to their heart.

“;If nothing ever goes right, take it to the left, left is where your heart is, and your heart is love, and Love is God and God will set you free. Aloha.”;

Details about memorial services were pending.
