Rainbow Wahine get first win

The Hawaii women's basketball team is on the board.

Allie Patterson scored 20 and Megan Tinnin and Dita Liepkalne added 18 apiece as the Rainbow Wahine earned their first win of the year, a 77-70 defeat of Utah Valley last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Wahine were wary of the Wolverines, who were coming off a win at Boise State. But Hawaii (1-6) shot 51.8 percent, compared to 42.4 for UVU (2-4), and outrebounded the opponents for the first time this season.

 

Wie makes a run at LPGA card

Hall of Famers Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak began their careers in the LPGA's qualifying tournament.

Now it is former phenom Michelle Wie's turn.

The Punahou graduate will tee it up in the LPGA's final qualifying tournament at the Champions Course and Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., this week with a tour card up for grabs.

She will have to finish in the top 40 in the 140-player field to earn a card, but will be aiming for the top 20 and the higher priority for LPGA events that comes with it.

 

Hunt-Radke team wins tournament

Bill Hunt and Maurice Radke, representing The Golf Academy of Hawaii, birdied the first playoff hole to win the 2008 Aloha Section PGA E-Z-GO/Golf Concepts Head Professional-Assistant Professional Championship.

Hunt and Radke outlasted Tim Herek and Kalani Kiaaina, representing the Hawaii Prince Golf Club. The teams were tied yesterday after 36 holes with two-day totals of nine-under 135.

Hunt and Radke earned a first-place check for $2,500.

BYUH climbs to No. 9 in poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii matched its highest NCAA Division II ranking in men's basketball this week, climbing to No. 9.

The Seasiders were also ranked ninth last year, as well as on Dec. 21, 2004.

BYUH is 3-0 after beating Western New Mexico 108-92 last week. The Seasiders next play Dec. 17 in Laie against Washburn.

 

NDNU dominates men's soccer stars

Notre Dame de Namur freshman Cristobal Montes has been named the PacWest player of the year and newcomer of the year in men's soccer.

Montes led the conference in scoring and goals as the Argonauts took the conference title and made their first NCAA Division II postseason appearance.

NDNU's Lance Thompson was named coach of the year and Grand Canyon's Franco Carotenuto is the goalkeeper of the year.

Hawaii Pacific midfielder Chance Bukoski, from Kapaa, is the only player from Hawaii to make the first team.
