Dogs on loose in Waialua are not a problem

Question: There are a pack of seven or eight feral dogs that hang out at the end of Goodale Avenue and Waialua Beach Road, where all the little kids walk to Waialua Elementary School. I've also seen them on the bike path side. People keep feeding these dogs. I'm worried that it will be just a matter of time before they will attack someone. I saw the Hawaiian Humane Society out there recently - someone must have called them - but it doesn't look like anything is being done. Can you help do something about these wild dogs?

Answer: As of last week, there didn't appear to be a problem with the dogs, according to the Hawaiian Humane Society.

The organization received a call from a city park caretaker on Nov. 19, requesting a humane dog trap to capture at least five dogs running loose at Waialua District Park, said spokeswoman Kawehi Yim.

An investigator delivered the trap on the morning of Nov. 21.

He instructed the caretaker on how to set up and use the trap, as well as how to reset the trap and who to contact should any dogs be caught, Yim said.

The officer had been checking the trap to see it was working properly, she said.

He also has been patrolling the area, looking for the loose dogs. He hasn't seen any, Yim said.

Yim said the park caretaker called the Humane Society last Wednesday, asking that the trap be removed because the dogs have not been coming around. The trap was to be removed.

The neighboring school then was asked if it was willing to set the trap.

However, officials there said that the dogs have not posed any problems, nor have they come onto school property, Yim said.

“;Therefore, they do not want to set a trap that may lure the dogs onto school property and possibly come into contact with the students,”; she said.

Humane Society officers will continue to monitor the area during their regular rounds, Yim said.

If you or other residents do see the pack again, she said to call 356-2250 for further assistance.

Q: Where can I drop off my old eyeglasses? I know the Lions Club used to collect them.

A: There are hundreds of locations to drop off unwanted eyeglasses, which are distributed to people who need help in improving their vision.

Call the District 50 Office of Lions Clubs International at 395-2883 for the most convenient location or go to its Web site - hawaiilions.org - and scroll to the bottom to the article, “;Lions Need Your Used Eyeglasses.”; The list is on a .pdf file: www.hawaiilions.org/info/081019_Eyeglass_Collection_Sites.pdf

To the driver of a white Lexus SUV who was in the drive-through lane at the Dillingham Popeye's about 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23. I was appalled to see you carelessly toss out of your window what appeared to be a wad of used tissues. Please be respectful of our aina and hold onto your trash until you are able to dispose of it in a more appropriate manner. - Anonymous
