Volleyball up against football

It would never schedule women's volleyball to conflict with football. It's the very reason that last week's Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament was split; Friday's semifinals and Sunday's final sandwiched the Warriors' football game Saturday.

First round, Friday, No. 7 seed Hawaii (28-3) vs. Belmont, 3 p.m. Hawaii time, San Diego (23-4) at USC (16-11), 5 p.m.

The NCAA selection committee did not take into consideration a major conflict when awarding both USC and UCLA the subregionals for Friday and Saturday. Saturday's second-round matches at the Galen Center (6 p.m.) and Pauley Pavilion (7 p.m.) will compete for attendance with the rivalry game at the Rose Bowl between the Trojans and the Bruins (1:30 p.m. kickoff).

“;We put in to host Thursday-Friday,”; USC coach Mick Haley said. “;I don't know what went into the thinking.

“;We're happy to be home but, without question, we have the toughest (subregional). My attitude has always been that you're going to have to beat those really good teams at some point if you're going to win the national title. But it is disappointing that some of the teams have easy first rounds. We don't.”;

The 12th-ranked Women of Troy (16-11) host West Coast Conference champion and 15th-ranked San Diego (23-4) in Friday's second match. Hawaii (28-3), which remained at No. 6 in yesterday's AVCA Coaches Top 25, opens first-round play at the Galen Center with Atlantic Sun champ Belmont (25-7) at 3 p.m. Hawaii time.
