Roderick Flemings had seen enough.

Flemings threw his Hawaii teammates on his back in the second half - scoring 19 of his 22 points after intermission - as the Rainbow Warriors defeated Prairie View A&M 78-70 before a crowd of 3,090 last night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Bill Amis (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Flemings (13 boards) recorded their first career double-doubles.

“;I got it going,”; Flemings said. “;My teammates got it to me, knocked shots down, got my confidence going.

“;I felt good, that's the best I felt this year.”;

Hawaii (3-2) earned a three-game winning streak and remained unbeaten against Southwestern Athletic Conference competition in 12 games.

Prairie View (3-5) remained winless against Division I opponents, all on the road.

Flemings was quiet throughout the first half. But once he started to assert himself in the offense with pull-up jumpers and strong takes to the hoop, spacing opened up for baskets inside or trips for teammates to the free-throw line.

Amis went 9-for-11 at the charity stripe in the second half, in which the Rainbows outscored the Panthers 49-33.

“;His run was our run, it fueled us a lot,”; said Amis, who was credited with six blocked shots. “;We were executing the offense a lot better in the second half.”;

Twenty-one turnovers put Hawaii at a disadvantage, but the Rainbows hit a ridiculous 14-for-16 (87.5 percent) in the second half to offset 30.8 shooting in the first.

The Rainbows had a 16-8 run to start the second half and went ahead for the first time, 47-45, on a Flemings pull-up jumper from the baseline with 12 minutes to play.

Once Flemings began to assert himself, the Panthers started double-teaming - leaving open other 'Bows.

Flemings also came up big by fouling out Darnell Hugee, the Panthers' best player, by drawing a charge on the block with 10 minutes to play. Two other Prairie View starters fouled out as Hawaii shot a whopping 43 free throws.

Panthers coach Byron Rimm II declined comment after the game.

Prairie View looked to press the issue early with dribble penetration from a speedy backcourt.

Derek Johnson scored 18 points and Chris Jones added 14 for the Panthers, who even went with a small-ball lineup of four guards and a forward at one point.

For a time, it worked. Hawaii got off to a slow start - trailing 9-2 and 16-8 - and never really found a flow offensively before the half.

It was a frustrating first period overall for the Rainbows, who wanted to exploit a size advantage inside but never could consistently deliver the ball into the post.

Prairie View, facing a height deficit at every position, even posted a 20-8 scoring advantage in the paint at halftime and finished with a 34-24 advantage.

“;I thought at the beginning our guys didn't show Prairie View A&M the respect they deserve by not coming out prepared to play, and that's on me,”; Hawaii coach Bob Nash said, who now has the first winning record of his coaching career at UH.

“;We made some adjustments at halftime, talked about the things we needed to be successful ... we're still learning to play with each other. It's gratifying to get the win, but sometimes we have to play ugly. That first half we played ugly. Second half, we stepped up our intensity on defense.”;

The Panthers' guards pestered Hawaii fullcourt and profited with 27 points off turnovers.

Prairie View A&M mixed its defenses effectively between man and zone and the Rainbows got no closer than six points before trailing 37-29 at the half.

The Rainbows leave Friday for their only nonconference road trip of the season, at Illinois on Monday.

Backup point guard Hiram Thompson was inactive with an injured hamstring.
