Water Works group honors Kauai's Doi

The American Water Works Association presented Edward Doi, a Kauai Department of Water civil engineer, with a Presidential Gold Award for his achievement as membership recruiting chairman of AWWA's Hawaii section. Doi has also recruited members from Guam, American Samoa and other Pacific Basin areas for nine years.

Kapiolani Community College has received a $25,000 grant from the Hawaii Pacific Islands Campus Compact, an organization of college and university presidents in the state established to enhance the links between their respective colleges and universities and their local communities. The award recognizes Kapiolani's emphasis on service learning.

The money will be used to strengthen the Palolo P-20 Pipeline Program, under which children living in Palolo Valley Homes and attending Palolo Elementary School get extra help learning to read. The funds also will support faculty participation in Science and Civic Engagement Summer Institute in Chicago in August.

Maui Community College and the University of Hawaii Foundation have received $5,000 from the Lifeguard Charitable Fund to purchase specialized digital X-ray equipment for the Maui Oral Health Center and its Mobile Dental Van. The van travels throughout Maui to reach economically disadvantaged community members.
