Rainbow Wahine get an education

POSTED: Monday, December 01, 2008

Stanford showed the Hawaii women's basketball team why the Cardinal went to the NCAA championship game last season.

The No. 5 Cardinal dominated in all phases as the Rainbow Wahine absorbed an 83-54 thrashing before a crowd of 456 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic tournament MVP Jayne Appel was perfect from the floor in eight attempts and scored 16 points in 20 minutes to lead a crushing post attack for Stanford, last year's national runner-up to Tennessee.

“;They're a class team, a great team, they play together,”; Hawaii coach Jim Bolla said. “;They've got great talent ... this is going to prepare us for the (Western Athletic Conference). No one is going to be this good.”;

Hawaii center Sarah Ilic led the Wahine with a career-high 15 points and point guard Keisha Kanekoa added 12 on 5-for-9 shooting.

The 0-6 mark is the worst start to a season for Hawaii, but the Wahine feel like their efforts last night and against No. 19 Purdue on Saturday were steps in the right direction.

“;I always get excited to play harder teams and people who are well known,”; Ilic said. “;I find it as a positive outcome. It's a real confidence-booster for everyone, I feel.”;

The Wahine went with a dual-point-guard alignment for the second straight game, with senior Catherine Cho starting alongside Kanekoa. Cho put in a career-high eight points, but Hawaii assisted on only eight baskets against 28 turnovers.

The Cardinal held Megan Tinnin, Hawaii's leading scorer through five games, to a season-low two points on 1-for-4 shooting.

Taking away Hawaii's 3-point shooting was an emphasis for Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer. The Wahine only attempted nine shots from behind the arc and made three.

“;I thought (Hawaii) played very hard, they've very scrappy, and they didn't let us do everything we wanted to do,”; VanDerveer said.

Hawaii's best chance yet to notch a win could come tomorrow night against Division I independent school Utah Valley.
