Falling TV kills 4-year-old boy

A 4-year-old boy died Saturday after a stack of broken appliances fell on him at his Waianae home, according to police.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy as Kainalu Kanika Joey Paka Valasco. On Friday the boy's father placed a broken television set on top of a broken oven and stove on the front porch. The next day, the father saw his son climbing into the oven and told him to get out, police said.

The father heard a crashing sound, police said, looked back and saw his son unconscious on the ground with the TV set next to him.

Attacker injures investigating officer

A Honolulu police officer was attacked early yesterday when an alleged thief jumped out from bushes in Waianae, police said.

Shortly before 2 a.m., a 42-year-old officer was checking an abandoned vehicle at Farrington Highway and Ala Walua Street, police said. The suspect then emerged from nearby bushes and allegedly attacked the officer, causing minor facial injuries.

The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft and assaulting a police officer.

Passenger busted in Barbers burglary

Police arrested a 43-year-old Waianae man yesterday after he allegedly stole items from a Barbers Point shipping business and fled in a stolen vehicle.

At about 12:55 a.m., the man was riding in a vehicle driven by another male that smashed through several fences the area, police said.

Federal officers stopped the vehicle in Kapolei and detained the passenger, but the male driver escaped on foot, police said.

Honolulu police officers investigating a burglary in Barbers Point found a connection between the suspect detained by the feds and the burglary. Officers also learned that the vehicle stopped by the feds had been reported stolen, police said.

They also found property stolen from the shipping business inside the vehicle.

The man was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, theft, and possession of burglary tools.

Couple sought in home invasion

Police are looking for a couple that allegedly robbed an elderly couple at gunpoint in their Waianae home early yesterday.

At about 5:30 a.m., a man and a woman in their early 30s allegedly entered a home belonging to a 85-year-old man and 83-year-old woman. The man was holding a gun, and both he and the woman demanded money, according to police. They left with the elderly woman's purse, police said.

The suspects then fled in a car. Police did not provide a description of the suspects.

Pedestrian killed on Big Island

A 33-year-old Big Island woman died after an alleged drunken driver hit her Friday night as she crossed Akoni Pule Highway.

Police identified the pedestrian as Stanette Medeiros of Kapaau, North Kohala.

Big Island police received a 911 call at 9:36 p.m. and determined that a 20-year-old man driving a four-door Honda sedan struck the woman in the middle of the highway while traveling east.

The driver fled the scene, but later returned, police said.

Medeiros was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:09 a.m. Saturday, marking the 25th traffic fatality in Big Island this year.

Police think speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

The driver, a Kapaau man, was arrested for investigation of negligent homicide, drunken driving, an accident involving death and prohibitions involving minors.

He was released pending further investigation.
