Stand-up paddle board enthusiasts say the sport works out all of the body's muscles, neck to toes.
“;It gives you a better balance of life,”; said Reid Inouye, president of Paddle Core Fitness. “;It takes away stress. People that were landlocked realize the ocean is really healthy for you in a sense of body and mind.”;
Each 55-minute session is touted as comparable to two hours in the gym. Certified instructors teach participants paddling techniques that target particular muscles.
Individuals are put in groups that fit their skill level. The workout sessions are for those who are familiar with the sport. (For those interested in learning, the company also offers stand-up paddle board lessons at $75 per person, with group lessons also available.)
Inouye, 52, established the company a year ago, teaching people how to stand-up paddle after he became hooked to the sport.
“;I haven't stressed since I started this,”; he said. “;I'm a lot stronger and healthier than I was 10 years ago.”;
The sessions offer a way to get toned and lose weight while enjoying the scenic environment. During a workout, sightings of fish or turtles are frequent.
“;It's the best gym you can go to in Hawaii,”; said Inouye.
His passion for the sport also led Inouye to create a magazine dedicated to stand-up paddling, due to debut in January. Inouye, a former surf contest promoter of 26 years, is co-publisher of a surfing publication, Heavywater Magazine, and executive producer of a surfing show, “;Heavywater Television.”;
