SDSU keeps Wahine winless

A reeling Hawaii women's basketball team is looking for answers—and fast—entering the toughest two games on its schedule.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-4) took a discouraging 71-48 loss from San Diego State (3-2) yesterday on the first day of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.

Two powerhouses await. UH plays No. 19 Purdue at 1:10 p.m. today and No. 5 Stanford—last year's national runner-up—tomorrow.

After UH displayed good ball control in the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational 13 days ago, turnovers again were a primary concern. The Wahine coughed up the ball 20 times in the first half and 27 for the game.

Vercruyssen to represent U.S.

Hawaii trampoline gymnast Nani Vercruyssen is one of four gymnasts to represent the United States in the Pan American Championships to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The 16-year-old will compete in the over-17 senior competition after receiving an under-age exemption. Vercruyssen is a three-time world champion among trampolinists 17 and under.

Vercruyssen hopes to secure a spot on the United States team in next year's Pan-American Games.

Tritons too much for Sea Warriors

Hawaii Pacific freshman guard Paris Gravely scored a game-high 20 points in a 73-60 defeat of UC-San Diego yesterday in the second day of the North Star Women's Basketball Invitational in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Forward Maltressa Neely added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (1-3), earning her second double-double in as many games.

Hawaii Pacific will play No. 17 Holy Family today in the final game of the tournament.
