Bail is $1 million in home invasion

A 25-year-old man charged in connection with a home-invasion robbery in St. Louis Heights last month is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Honolulu Police Department cellblock.

Prosecutors charged Jason Smith on Wednesday with several counts of robbery, kidnapping, burglary and firearm violations. He was scheduled to make his initial appearance in District Court today.

Police arrested Smith in Hawaii Kai on Monday in connection with the Oct. 27 incident.

Police said three men forced their way into the St. Louis Heights home at 11 p.m. and were allegedly looking for someone and demanding drugs. Police said the suspects learned the person they were looking for no longer lived there, and then robbed the 10 people who were at the home.

Police are still looking for two other suspects.

One suspect is described as in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 170 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a black hoodie, black pants and a dark bandanna.

The other suspect is said to be in his early 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall and about 180 to 200 pounds. He also was wearing black pants and a black hoodie. All three men were reported to have had assault-type firearms.

Man held in heist of camera store

Clay Renaldo Lewis, 38, was expected to make an initial appearance in District Court today after being charged Wednesday with burglary and theft for allegedly stealing $30,000 in photography equipment.

Lewis was charged yesterday and was being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police said an off-duty officer was headed home at 11:42 p.m. Monday when he saw a man in a hooded sweatshirt near the University of Hawaii at Manoa carrying a large bag in the parking lot of a camera store that had closed for the night.

The officer reported the suspicious activity as the suspect left in a van. The van was tracked to a parking lot at an apartment complex, but the suspect had fled on foot.

Officers found new and used photography equipment in the van, police said. Lewis was found nearby on Keeaumoku Street hiding between buildings.
