For Darren Johnson, two years guiding the Kaimuki football program was enough.
Darren Johnson:
Leaves Kaimuki after
two seasons, two play-
off appearances
He stepped down this week as head coach, sharing the news with his Bulldogs team Monday.
“;It's all good, nothing bad,”; said Johnson, who led Kaimuki to the playoffs in both seasons.
Last year, the Bulldogs won the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference title, reached the Division II state semifinals and finished 11-2.
This fall, Kaimuki (5-5) reached the OIA Red playoffs and lost to Leilehua in the quarterfinals.
“;It was definitely a tough call. I love coaching, but at this time, I felt I needed to step down. Everybody asks why. No reason, it's just time,”; he said. “;I'm trying to make everything real good and move forward.”;
In an earlier stint as Kailua head coach, the former Kahuku football and basketball standout led the Surfriders to five OIA title games and one co-championship before leaving there in 2004.
Meanwhile, Farrington coach Randall Okimoto squashed an online rumor that he would resign after the season to accept an administrative position.
“;I have no interest in that,”; Okimoto said, laughing a bit. “;I have no idea where that came from.”;
Farrington plays Punahou in a Division I semifinal game of the First Hawaiian Bank State Football Championships on Friday.
