Libraries receive gift of 'Hawai'i Snowman'

Copies of the children's holiday book “;The Hawai'i Snowman”; have been donated to all the state's public libraries, with a presentation to be made at a reading Saturday at the Hawaii State Library.

The book, about a snowman who discovers the meaning of Christmas in a journey to Hawaii, is illustrated by Michel Le, graphic design manager for Belt Collins Hawaii, and written by his wife, Christine. Belt Collins is sponsoring the donation.

Anne Mapes, chairman and CEO of Belt Collins, will read the book at 10:30 a.m. in the Edna Allyn Room for Children, and Le will display some of his original illustrations. Call 586-3510.

 

UH Phi Kappa Phi members sought

New life is coming to the Hawaii Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The University of Hawaii-Manoa group is reactivating and looking for old members.

Phi Kappa Phi is an international honor society that promotes excellence in all fields of higher education. Among its goals is to provide awards and scholarships to outstanding students and faculty.

Bamboo Ridge marks its 30th

Bamboo Ridge Press declares it's “;Not Pau Yet!”; with a celebration on Dec. 6 at the Banyan Tree Showroom of the Hale Koa Hotel.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the publication of Bamboo Ridge's very first issue, the organization is honoring 30 individuals and organizations that have helped Hawaii's original homegrown literary press.

The birthday bash will feature a buffet starting at 11 a.m., as well as entertainment by Lee Cataluna and Lee Tonouchi and “;lots of good-kine door prizes and giveaways.”;

Among those to be recognized with “;Bamboo Shoots Awards”; are Nyla Fujii-Babb, Claudia Cannon, Wayne Kawamoto, Nora Okja Keller, Lois-Ann Yamanaka and Cora Yees.

Donations wanted for abused kids

The Children's Alliance of Hawaii is seeking donations for its annual Christmas Angel Program to provide gifts to sexually abused children.

Individuals, organizations, companies and schools may adopt paper angels that carry the holiday wish lists of hundreds of children. Last year, more than 400 abused children received gifts through the program.
