Makiki man charged in stabbing

Police have charged a 34-year-old Makiki man in the stabbing of a taxi driver last week but are still seeking a second suspect in the case.

Courage Lee Elkshoulder, who turned himself in to police Friday, was charged with attempted murder and first-degree robbery, with bail set at $150,000. Elkshoulder, who lives on Hassinger Street, allegedly stabbed a taxi driver in the neck on Nov. 15.

A driver for TheCab picked up two men in the Makiki area and took them to an upscale street in Manoa. Elkshoulder allegedly stabbed the driver in his neck, and the two men took the driver's money and fled.

CrimeStoppers had issued an alert, calling for the public's help, and included a photo from a surveillance camera of the two men. Elkshoulder turned himself in at police headquarters at 3:35 p.m. Friday.

Police are still looking for the second man, described as in his mid-20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds with black hair and bangs.

The driver was hospitalized and has since been released.

Fire proves costly to Kailua apartment

Firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze yesterday that caused about $120,000 in damage to a one-bedroom apartment in Kailua.

Fire Capt. Robert Main said clutter in the apartment hampered the crews responding to the fire at 350 Aoloa St. A-101. It was extinguished at 1:31 p.m., he said.

The sole occupant was not at home at the time of the fire, which started in the kitchen and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage to the structure and $40,000 to the contents, said Main. The cause is under investigation.
