Two Oahu churches are celebrating their 50th anniversaries in events today.

» Music is the language shared by the multiethnic congregation at Waianae United Methodist Church, 85-671 Farrington Highway. The 10 a.m. service will be followed by a feast and program of cultural music and dance by the Tongan, Samoan and English-speaking members. Elected officials from the area and guests from other churches are among the 300 people expected at the event.

The Rev. Debra Murray, new senior pastor, said the goal of the congregation of 150 is to be engaged with others in community challenges such as helping the growing homeless population.

» The 10:30 a.m. service at Moanalua Community Church, 20 Bougainville Drive, will also celebrate the diversity of people who worship there. Three congregations use the historical sanctuary each weekend: Cup of Freedom-United Church of Christ, New Life United Pentecostal Church and Trinity Samoan United Church of Christ, with a total of 700 members.

The A-frame structure is on the Hawaii Registry of Historic Places for its triangular stained-glass window, measuring 30 feet tall and 44 feet wide at its base, which depicts Pearl Harbor, historic sea battles and symbols from military services and several religions. The service today will honor church architect Clifford Young and will feature the opening of the time capsule sealed by members in 1958.
