Passers-by detain suspect in assault

Police arrested a 54-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a shop owner and another person because they would not let him buy beer.

Police said a 65-year-old man was closing his store Wednesday night at 435 Atkinson Drive when the suspect approached and said he wanted to come in and buy beer.

The store owner said he was closing and told the suspect to return the next day. Police said the suspect then kicked the door open and tried to enter the store. The owner tried to force the suspect out, but the suspect punched him repeatedly in the face, police said. A 63-year-old woman in the store also tried to stop the suspect and also was allegedly punched.
