Police ID Waianae man who died

A Waianae man who died Tuesday when he fell off a pickup truck on Waianae Valley Road has been identified as Russell Reyes.

The 38-year-old man was sitting on the roof of the pickup truck trying to keep a garbage bin secured, police said. He fell as the truck drove along a left bend in the road.

Reyes died at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

He was the 42nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 56 at this time last year.

Strong winds boost blaze on Lanai

Windy conditions caused the Lanai brush fire to flare up yesterday, according to a news release by Maui County officials. However, there was no change in the estimate of 1,000 acres being consumed by the blaze.

Lanai firefighters assisted by Maui firefighters continued to make water drops and conduct mop-up operations yesterday. The fire began around noon Tuesday and forced the evacuation of about 600 people.

The fire's cause remains under investigation. No injuries or damage to structures have been reported.

Man sought in sex assault

Police were looking for a man in his 30s who allegedly sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman early yesterday morning after the two went drinking.

Police have opened a first-degree sexual assault case.

The woman told police she went out drinking with an acquaintance at several bars and then caught a taxicab to his Kaneohe home.

The man allegedly sexually assaulted the woman at his residence at about 1:30 a.m. yesterday.

The man had not yet been arrested last night.

Gunmen rob bar downtown on Nimitz

Police are looking for three men involved in the armed robbery of a downtown bar late last night.

Police said that at about 11:15 p.m., two men entered Club Eva at 180 North Nimitz Highway and ordered the patrons to get onto the floor. The men were armed with a shotgun and a pistol.

Police said the suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, as well cash from four patrons at the bar. The suspects fled in a waiting vehicle driven by another man, police said.

The vehicle was believed to have headed toward the airport on Nimitz.

The suspect with the handgun is described as about 5-foot-3-to 5-foot-7, having a medium build and he was wearing an orange bandana and a white and blue long-sleeve shirt or jacket.

The suspect armed with the shotgun was described as 5-foot-3, with a slim build. He was wearing a blue sweat shirt and a red bandana.

  Descriptions of the getaway driver and the car were not available. No one was hurt.

Police said the suspects are wanted for investigation of first-degree robbery.

Police arrest man in assault case

Police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with an assault at a Kakaako mini-mart Tuesday that sent a woman to the hospital.

At about 8 a.m. the suspect went into Walk-In Liquors at 699 Auahi St. and was allegedly throwing juice to another man outside, said store owner Yaxin Shi, 45.

When Shi's wife, 39-year-old Yue Qin Weng, tried to stop the suspect, he allegedly punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground.

Weng was taken to the Queen's Medical Center for treatment of injuries to her head and leg.

Police arrested the man who was in the store for investigation of third-degree assault and on an unrelated contempt warrant.
