Abstract nature

The internationally award-winning artist Andrew Rose has created a body of work that translates the aesthetic of nature into the abstract.

“;Liminal,”; exhibiting at Nuuanu Gallery at Marks Garage through Nov. 26, was a project that took place over three years in and out of studios in New York, Spain, Israel and Hawaii. It comprises gouache, acrylic and watercolor paintings, plus digital art.

“;While I was in Spain for a residency, I hiked near a beach in a desert location. Here I'm again surrounded by water. I live in Tantalus and volunteer at the Waikiki Aquarium, so this show translates the visual sense of being immersed in beautiful nature,”; Rose says. “;It is an abstract response to those natural places.”;

Rose's show displays more than 75 works, an indication of his productive nature. That he also serves as chairman of visual and performing arts at Island Pacific Academy, teaches at the Academy Art Center and volunteers as exhibits interpreter at the aquarium, all while continuing on as a working artist, reveals his diverse contributions to the local arts scene. Surprisingly, for all his experience, this is Rose's first solo show in a commercial gallery. Hopefully, Hawaii will see lots more from this talented artist.

Nuuanu Gallery, at 1161 Nuuanu Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays and until 3 p.m. Saturdays. Call 536-9828.
