West Oahu beats Honolulu
Yonder Alonso hit a home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving Waikiki a 3-2 victory over North Shore in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game last night at Hans L'Orange Park.
Alonso's two-out, bases-empty blast on a 3-2 pitch gave the pitching win to BeachBoys reliever Jeremy Papelbon (1-0), who hurled a scoreless top of the tenth.
The win gave Waikiki (18-16) a 11/2-game lead over Honolulu in the East Dvision with two games to play. North Shore fell to 14-19.
Kyle Peter, Mark Hallberg and Adam Loewen all had three hits as West Oahu beat Honolulu 5-1 in the first game.
The West Division champion CaneFires (18-14) extended their winning streak to five games with 15 hits, including 14 singles, and took advantage of seven walks and three errors.
The Sharks fell to 16-17.
Victorino will throw out first pitch
Shane Victorino, centerfielder of the world champion Philadelphia Phillies, will throw out the first pitch at the Hawaii Winter Baseball game Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The game between the Honolulu Sharks and Waikiki BeachBoys starts at 7 p.m.
Victorino, who is from Maui, will be honored at “;Island Air Game Night.”;

Ploeger named Player of the Week
The Pacific West Conference named BYU-Hawaii sophomore goalie Becky Ploeger this week's Soccer Player of the Week.
In three games, Ploeger had a 0.00 goals against average, including two shutouts, leading the Seasiders to the Conference championship and the program's first NCAA Division II playoffs berth.
Ploeger was the 2007 PacWest Goalie of the Year.
